At least 20 people including four children were killed and 32 others injured in a Russian glide bomb attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. Several people are also believed to be missing under the rubble, according to the BBC.
Local officials said five glide bombs struck residential buildings in the city on Saturday morning (October 10), local time.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration, saying Russia’s attack on Zaporizhzhia was Moscow’s way of showing its “gratitude” for a deal announced by US President Donald Trump the previous night. The deal eased restrictions on Moscow over diesel imports from Russia.
Zelensky also said Ukraine’s 13 other regions had come under attack overnight. He argued that Russia views any move to ease pressure as an opportunity to continue the war.
Photos and videos from the attack site showed a residential apartment building almost completely destroyed.
Acting Mayor of Zaporizhzhia Regina Kharchenko told Ukrainian television at the scene that the building had been struck on the ground floor, causing the upper floors to collapse.
She said rescue operations were underway, with more than 80 personnel deployed at the site. The operation was expected to continue throughout the day.
Rescue workers have been periodically stopping their work to listen for sounds from survivors trapped beneath the rubble. Their priority is to locate and rescue anyone still alive under the debris.
