The Congress-led opposition alliance India has called for a massive protest in New Delhi on Monday over the alleged crackdown on young protesters.
A source in the alliance disclosed the information to Hindustan Times on Saturday (October 10).
Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is set to extend her stay in Delhi to join the protest. Her nephew and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee will also take part in the demonstration.
The youth-led Cockroach Janata Party had announced a gathering at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
However, police obstruction prevented the protesters from reaching the venue. The party’s founder and chief Abhijit Deepak, along with other senior leaders, were detained.
Mamata Banerjee was detained in Delhi on Saturday and remains in police custody, according to the report. Former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal was also detained.
Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, who is also influential among young people, was detained on Saturday morning. He was at his residence when he was taken into custody.
Rathee returned to India from Germany to join the movement demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He was detained two days after returning to the country.
Police said more than 7,000 protesters had been detained over the two days, Friday and Saturday, in connection with the demonstrations.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party has declared that its movement will continue until the chief election commissioner resigns.
