Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s Democrats party, has said the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a mistake, arguing that it did not serve Israel’s national interests.
“I unequivocally believe that killing Khamenei was a mistake because the assassination did not serve the interests of the State of Israel,” Golan said.
Khamenei was killed in the initial strikes of the US-Israeli war against Iran, which began on February 28. Several other senior Iranian officials were also killed in the attacks.
Following Khamenei’s death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position of Iran’s supreme leader. Mojtaba is widely believed to be more willing to take risks than his father.
In 2003, Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa against the development and use of nuclear weapons in Iran, arguing that such weapons were contrary to Islamic teachings.
Golan also described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s goal of overthrowing Iran’s government as unrealistic.
