Two crude bombs exploded inside and outside the gate of Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) in the early hours of Thursday, triggering panic among students.
The incident occurred around 12:30AM, when unidentified individuals arrived on a motorcycle and threw two cocktails targeting the university gate before fleeing, said Gopalganj Sadar Police Station OC Md Aminul Islam.
One of the cocktails struck a tree outside the university gate and exploded, while the other exploded inside the campus. No casualties were reported.
The blasts caused panic among students on campus.
GSTU Chhatra Dal President Durjoy Shubho alleged that the attack was intended to create fear ahead of a freshman reception programme scheduled to be held on Thursday.
According to him, MPs from three constituencies in Gopalganj are expected to attend the university administration-organised event as guests. He described the incident as a planned act aimed at creating panic ahead of the programme and called for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice.
Police said they have launched an operation to identify those responsible and bring them under the law.
