Sub-registrar returns after being ‘taken away’

A sub-registrar was allegedly taken away from his office in broad daylight in Khulna on Wednesday afternoon, only to return about an hour later.

Tanmay Kumar Mondal, sub-registrar of the office, was reportedly taken away around 2:30pm, prompting law enforcement agencies to launch an investigation after the incident came to light.

CCTV footage from the office shows two men taking Mondal away on a rickshaw while holding him. A masked man can be seen running ahead of the rickshaw, while two motorcycles follow it.

Earlier, Mondal was allegedly forced onto a motorcycle in front of his office. A local media worker also captured a photograph of the incident.

About an hour later, Mondal returned to his office but did not provide a clear account of what had happened.

He only said he had been taken towards the Jail Ghat area of the Bhairab River on the pretext of showing some documents. He was later released.

Khulna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lokman Hossain said police have begun investigating who was involved in the incident.

Police have spoken to Mondal, he said, adding that the sub-registrar did not file any complaint of abduction.
