Youth and Sports Minister Aminul Haque has urged Bangladesh's cricketers and footballers to be more responsible and uphold the principle of putting the country first after disappointing performances and discipline-related concerns surrounding recent competitions.

“We can lose in football or cricket. But it is not right to go sightseeing in different places while participating in competitions. Players have to be more responsible and remain committed to the idea that Bangladesh comes first,” he said.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday while handing jerseys and sports equipment to 12 Bangladeshi athletes set to compete in the Para Asian Games at the National Sports Council.

The Asian Games ended two days ago, with Bangladesh winning only one bronze medal from participation in 22 disciplines. The country's cricket teams, which had been among the main medal hopes, disappointed, while the men's football team also suffered a poor campaign in the Indonesian ASEAN Cup during the Games period.

The minister said poor results could happen in sports, but players must maintain discipline and take their responsibilities seriously.

The government is forming a committee to review Bangladesh's overall performance and incidents during the Asian Games, he said.

“After the committee submits its report, we will begin long-term training from December. We do not want results immediately; we want results after five years. Players will participate in tournaments and competitions during this period, but they will also have to remain accountable,” Aminul said.

Bangladesh will compete in six disciplines at the Para Asian Games — archery, athletics, badminton, swimming, table tennis and boccia.

The athletes have undergone 70 days of training ahead of the Games. Bangladesh has medal hopes in athletics, particularly through Chaiti Rani, and in archery through Jhuma Akter.

The contingent includes 12 athletes, while another six to seven people will accompany them to assist the athletes because of their physical disabilities. Five coaches will accompany the athletes, one for each sport, while officials from the National Sports Council, the ministry and the Paralympic authorities will also be part of the 32-member contingent.
