Western countries are growing increasingly concerned over alleged Chinese espionage, technology acquisition and cyber activities, particularly in AI, cybersecurity and other advanced technologies.
The concerns have recently intensified in the UK, where MI5 reportedly warned on September 30 about academic research allegedly linked to China’s Ministry of State Security.
The Epoch Times reported that more than 100 UK-linked academics had worked on projects allegedly connected to Chinese intelligence, including research in AI and cybersecurity.
Similar concerns have emerged in Germany, where a couple was reportedly arrested in Munich in May over alleged espionage for China.
Experts have warned that information obtained through such activities could potentially be used for surveillance, cyber operations and political influence, while access to critical infrastructure could create additional security risks.
The developments have prompted renewed debate in Western countries over academic cooperation, research funding and foreign access to sensitive technologies.
