Elderly parents neglected and abandoned by their children are finding shelter and care at the ‘Nirapad Briddhashram’ in Kishoreganj upazila of Nilphamari, where 65 helpless elderly people are currently living with dignity and care.
Located beside the Nil Sagar Canal in Jurabandha area of Barabhita Union, the old-age home began its journey in 2018 on 14 decimals of land with three units. Its founder and director Sajedur Rahman Saju established the facility after witnessing the suffering of elderly parents who were neglected by their children.
Many residents spent a major part of their lives raising their children but eventually found no place in their own homes. At the facility, they receive accommodation, food, clothing and medical treatment, while Saju personally oversees their care.
Volunteer Rafia Jannat Rafi said she has been responsible for caring for the elderly residents since the institution was established.
“I care for them just as I would care for my own parents. I have seen closely the pain they carry because of separation from their children,” she said.
Sajedur Rahman Saju said he was inspired by Indian singer Nachiketa’s famous song ‘Briddhashram’ to establish the institution.
“About 270 people separated from their families have found shelter here at different times. Currently, 65 elderly people are staying here. We have taken responsibility for their accommodation, food, treatment, clothing and other necessities,” he said.
