The government’s stepped-up crackdown on extortion, land grabbing, terrorism and organised crime is winning public support, as law enforcement agencies move against offenders regardless of their political identity.

The government has directed law enforcement agencies to take action against criminals without considering their political connections or influence. The tough approach, coupled with disciplinary measures within the BNP, has created a perception that the authorities are taking a firmer stand against crime.

As part of the crackdown, drives against extortion, land grabbing and organised crime have been intensified. Sources said agencies have been instructed to act whenever allegations are substantiated, irrespective of the identity or influence of those involved.

The BNP has also taken several measures to restore discipline within the party. The resignation of reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misti and the dissolution of the Dhaka North BNP committee have been viewed as part of an internal “purification drive” following allegations of irregularities and criminal activities.

Authorities have also stepped up surveillance of individuals allegedly involved in various criminal incidents, including attacks in Mirpur’s Radda Clinic and ECB Chattar. Special teams are reportedly monitoring underworld and organised crime groups operating in different parts of the capital.

A senior Home Ministry official said no political identity or official position would protect anyone if allegations of criminal activities were proven. The government remains firm on taking legal action against those involved in extortion, land grabbing, terrorism and organised crime.

Law enforcement officials said the government’s firm stance has created greater scope for them to act against crime at the field level. They said action could now be taken based on evidence even when influential or politically connected individuals are allegedly involved.

Special Action Battalion (SRB) Director General Ahsan Habib Palash said offenders would face legal action regardless of their identity. He said law enforcement agencies had been instructed to remain active in combating crime.

A senior Dhaka Metropolitan Police official said drives against extortion, land grabbing and organised crime were continuing. Anyone involved in criminal activities would be brought under the law regardless of political identity, he said.

Uttara East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Morshed Alam said regular drives were being conducted to control crime. Necessary action was being taken after collecting information on criminal activities at the local level.

Observers believe the government’s visible crackdown on crime could help strengthen public confidence. However, ensuring equal application of the law regardless of political identity and sustaining the crackdown will remain a key test for the government.
