A college teacher was seriously injured after being allegedly beaten with a hammer and iron rods by a local Jubo Dal activist and his associates in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Monday.
The injured teacher was identified as Md Mokhlesur Rahman, son of late Khabir Uddin of Naoda Azampur village and an assistant professor of accounting at Azampur Technical College. He is currently undergoing treatment at Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.
According to police and local sources, Mokhlesur had a longstanding dispute over land with Jubo Dal activist Mizan. Around 1:30PM, while returning home after finishing classes at the college, Mokhlesur reached Naoda Azampur intersection, where Mizan and his associates Rony, Kamal, Intu, Biplob, Hasan, Sagar, Mahi Kha and Mithu allegedly attacked him.
The attackers allegedly beat him indiscriminately with iron rods and a hammer, leaving him seriously injured and lying on the ground. Locals later rescued him and took him to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.
While receiving treatment, Mokhlesur alleged that a land-related case was pending between them and that Mizan had demanded Tk5 lakh from him a few days earlier. He said the attack took place after he refused to pay the money, and alleged that it was a planned attempt to kill him stemming from previous enmity.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam Shahid confirmed the incident, saying a college teacher named Mokhles had been beaten over a land-related dispute. He said the injured teacher was undergoing treatment at the hospital and that necessary legal action was being processed.
