The US Coast Guard has located the wreckage of a medical aircraft that went missing with six people on board in the Atlantic Ocean.

The wreckage was found off the coast of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, during a search operation.

In a statement issued late Saturday, the Coast Guard said the aircraft lost contact after taking off from Bermuda for Boston early Saturday.

A section of the wreckage was initially spotted off the coast of Nantucket and was later confirmed to belong to the missing aircraft.

However, there was no immediate sign of the six passengers and crew members. The Coast Guard continued its search using vessels, aircraft and helicopters.

Before the aircraft disappeared, air traffic controllers had difficulty communicating with the pilot. At around 12:46 AM local time, a controller asked the pilot, “Are you not seeing the directions? Is that what you meant? Are you declaring an emergency?”

However, the pilot’s response could not be heard in a recording of the conversation captured by LiveATC.net.

The aircraft was a Gulfstream G100 air ambulance carrying a patient, a family member and four crew members when it took off from Bermuda for Boston.

The patient and the family member were Bermudian nationals, while the four crew members were reportedly Canadian citizens.

Radio communications indicated that the aircraft experienced an electrical problem as it approached Nantucket. According to FlightAware data, the aircraft descended several thousand feet within just three minutes.

It later disappeared from radar shortly after 1am local time.

The Coast Guard said on Saturday night that one of its vessels, the William Sparling, would continue searching throughout the night for those aboard the aircraft. Additional vessels, aircraft and helicopters were also deployed in the search.

The search continued for around 27 hours, covering an area of approximately 1,644 square miles, or 4,258 square kilometres.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda government said it was maintaining contact with the families of those on board.

Bermuda Premier David Burt said in a statement that his thoughts were with everyone on the aircraft and their families during the “deeply concerning” situation.

He expressed hope that all six people would be safely rescued and thanked the search and rescue teams for their ongoing efforts.
