At least 30 people were injured in a clash between relatives of a deceased teenage girl and hospital staff following an attack on Islami Bank Hospital in Motijheel of Dhaka.

The incident took place on Sunday night after the 14-year-old girl, Mahima, died at the hospital.

The girl’s relatives alleged that she died due to medical negligence after being admitted to the hospital on Friday evening with severe abdominal pain. Her father, Mokbul, demanded justice and accused the hospital authorities of assaulting them when they protested over her death.

However, hospital authorities claimed that a person named Sabuj, identifying himself as a relative of the deceased, demanded Tk 10 lakh after her death. They alleged that when the money was not paid, a group of 50 to 60 people attacked and vandalised the hospital later that night.

Dr Raiyan Hasan, deputy superintendent of Islami Bank Hospital Motijheel, said the patient was in critical condition and that the medical team did not have enough time to transfer her to the emergency or ICU.

He also alleged that the person who demanded the money was not a close relative of the patient and had arrived with 12 to 15 people.

Several patients receiving treatment at the hospital were also injured during the attack, disrupting medical services.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident and brought the situation under control.

Motijheel Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rezwanul Islam said, "police found a group of people throwing bricks and stones and subsequently separated the two sides. He said legal action would be taken if complaints were filed."

Police are also investigating whether any third party instigated the attack on the hospital.
