Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman was sent to jail on Sunday after a Dhaka court rejected his bail petition following a one-day remand in a case filed over alleged disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The case accuses him of creating a disturbance over a shortage of luggage trolleys and baggage facilities, obstructing government officials and assaulting officials and security personnel on duty.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamsed Alam passed the order after hearing submissions from both sides.
The investigation officer, seeking his detention, told the court that Akhteruzzaman had admitted to the incident during the one-day remand. He said the investigation was ongoing and that further verification was underway, making continued detention necessary.
Akhteruzzaman was brought to the CMM court around 1pm after completion of his remand. He was later taken to the courtroom under tight police security.
