Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the face of Bangladesh’s capital market will change within the next year as the government takes comprehensive measures to revive and deepen the market.
Speaking at the inauguration of World Investor Week 2026 at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh Auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday (October 4), he said the government had already taken measures including institutional reforms, automation, the establishment of Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) and infrastructure development.
Khosru said the market now needs practical “rescue” and “salvage” operations, which may require difficult decisions involving some stakeholders.
He said Bangladesh is moving towards fundamental changes in its financial architecture, reducing excessive reliance on traditional financing and encouraging businesses to raise funds through the capital market rather than high-interest bank loans.
The minister also said the government is preparing to access international capital markets through instruments including dollar bonds, panda bonds, samurai bonds and local-currency bonds.
He stressed coordinated efforts among regulators, banks, insurers, the NBR, Bangladesh Bank, exchanges and other market participants, along with stronger self-regulation, transparency and professional standards.
Khosru said investor confidence has started returning, with multinational and international investors showing greater interest in Bangladesh’s capital market.
