A fire broke out at a jhut warehouse in Tongi, Gazipur, on Saturday afternoon, destroying a large quantity of goods.

The fire broke out around 5 PM at the warehouse near Society Field in Mahabbatnagar area under Ward 44 of Tongi East police station.

Locals said the fire spread quickly as the warehouse contained large quantities of scrap fabric, plastic, used batteries and other flammable materials.

Three units of Tongi Fire Service went to the scene and brought the fire under control around 6:15 PM after nearly an hour of efforts. Firefighters later began the dumping operation.

Senior Station Officer Mohammad Shahin Alam said three units brought the fire under control and the dumping operation was underway.

Warehouse owner Shahin Alam claimed that almost all the goods were destroyed, causing losses of Tk 40-50 lakh. He said the fire was initially suspected to have started from an electrical short circuit.

No casualties were reported. The officer-in-charge of Tongi East Police Station and a team from industrial police visited the scene.
