The National Committee for Protection of Electricity Consumers’ Rights has demanded cancellation of prepaid meters, alleging consumer harassment and corruption, and called for the return of digital meters.
The demands were made at a roundtable at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday.
The committee also demanded lower electricity prices, a white paper on power sector corruption, withdrawal of cases against prepaid meter movement leaders and protection of consumers’ rights.
Committee Convener Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Ismail said the prepaid meter project would cost Tk 29,000 crore, while replacing existing digital meters could cause losses of another Tk 15,000 crore.
He also alleged that consumers were facing excessive bills and additional charges, along with problems caused by meter failures, server issues and blocked meters.
