Law Minister Asaduzzamn has expressed hope that online marriage registration will help prevent polygamy and child marriage by making it harder to conceal marriage-related information.

He made the remarks on Saturday while inaugurating a 10-day residential training programme on the use of software for online marriage and divorce registration at BRAC learning Centre in the capital.

The minister said registration data would gradually be linked to the central servers of the National Identity Card, birth registration and passport systems.

He said all marriage registrars, or qazis, across the country would gradually be brought under the digital registration system through training.

Explaining the benefits of the system, Asaduzzaman said authorities would be able to check whether someone was already married by searching their NID information online. This would make it more difficult to conceal an existing marriage and enter into another one without following the legal requirements, he said.

He also said the digital system would help authorities monitor whether child marriages were taking place in different areas and demonstrate the country’s enforcement of its law against child marriage.

The minister further said the government would soon begin posting sub-registrars across the country through a lottery system to break the long-standing influence of sub-registrars in Dhaka.
