Gold prices rose more than 1% in the global market on Friday after weaker-than-expected US employment data reduced concerns that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates this month.

At 7:05pm Bangladesh time, spot gold prices rose 1.1% to $4,223.49 per ounce. US gold futures also gained 1.2% to reach $4,254.10 per ounce.

The US dollar index fell slightly after data showed that employment growth in the United States slowed more than expected in September. Meanwhile, yields on 10-year and 30-year US Treasury bonds reached their highest levels since 2002 on Thursday.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, around 14% of traders now expect the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month, down from 28% before the employment data was released. At the beginning of the week, the probability stood at around 70%.

Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, told Reuters that the dollar weakened as expectations of an interest rate hike declined, supporting the upward trend in gold prices.

Gold prices have fallen by around 20% since the Iran-US-Israel war began at the end of February. Concerns that inflation caused by the war could keep interest rates elevated for a longer period have been cited as a major reason for the decline.

Among other precious metals, silver rose 2% to $62.07 per ounce, platinum gained 1% to $1,740.53, and palladium climbed 2.2% to $1,197.47.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, the price of 22-carat gold jewellery, the highest grade, is currently Tk 230,772 per bhori (11.664 grams), including VAT.

The price of 21-carat gold jewellery has been set at Tk 220,391 per bhori, while 18-carat gold costs Tk 189,248 per bhori and traditional-method gold costs Tk 154,256 per bhori.
