A US Department of Energy electrical engineer has been arrested on allegations of providing material support to Yemen’s Houthi movement, according to the US Justice Department.

Ashton Hamed Elaboudi, 51, was arrested after allegedly seeking equipment that could be used to manufacture explosive drones for the Houthis, according to US authorities.

The allegations were reported by CBS News and carried by Anadolu Agency, citing the US Justice Department and the FBI.

Authorities allege that Elaboudi travelled to Yemen and communicated with members of the Houthi movement as part of efforts to support the group.

The case involves allegations of providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation. The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

US authorities have not said whether Elaboudi had successfully supplied any equipment or technology to the Houthis.
