‘July Warrior’ Babul arrested in cyber case

Published : Thursday, 1 October, 2026 at 7:46 PM

Observer Online Report

Police have arrested Babul, office secretary of the Moulvibazar District July Political Prisoners Alliance Committee, in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act.

Babul was arrested by police from Sreemangal Police Station on Thursday night. His family said he was later transferred to Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station.

Sreemangal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sarkar Md Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the arrest, saying a person named Sifat filed the case against Babul.

According to the case statement, Babul had allegedly been spreading “false and misleading” information about Moulvibazar-4 (Kamalganj-Sreemangal) MP Alhaj Md Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury on social media, damaging the lawmaker’s reputation. Police said the complainant filed the case with the MP’s authorisation.

However, Babul’s family denied the allegations and claimed he was taken from his home at night and detained at the police station.

His wife, Anwara Begum, said a team of Sreemangal police went to their home around 1AM on Thursday and asked Babul to accompany them to the police station to meet the OC. She said Babul requested to go in the morning as he had a heart condition, but the police did not accept his request.

Anwara alleged that Babul was beaten after being taken to the station and then placed in the lockup. She said she waited outside the station with her children until 3AM but received no clear information about her husband. She later learned that he had been transferred to Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station.

Anwara also claimed that Babul was arrested and jailed during the anti-autocracy movement under the Awami League government and had served time in prison alongside BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
