A retired schoolteacher was found dead with her hands and feet tied inside a locked house in the Bhatikhana area of Barishal city on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Amena Khanam, 65, a former primary school teacher and a resident of Mehendiganj upazila.
Police recovered her body from the second floor of a building in the Khalpar area of Rokeya Azim Road around 4:30am. Her hands and feet were tied with cloth.
According to locals, tenants living next to Amena’s apartment noticed a foul smell coming from the house on Wednesday night. They informed the wife of the building owner, Rina Begum, who then informed Amena’s son, Rifat.
Rifat, who works for a private bank in Dhaka, informed the police after receiving the news.
Police later went to the spot, opened the locked house and found Amena’s body lying on a bed with her hands and feet tied.
Amena had retired from a government primary school in Mehendiganj. She had been living alone in the rented apartment for about a year.
Rina Begum said, "Amena had been living in their building for around a year and lived alone."
Barishal Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sushanta Sarkar said police went to the scene after receiving a phone call from Amena’s son.
The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police said they were investigating the incident and would take steps to identify and arrest those involved.
