Warner Bros. has announced the release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the franchise’s first feature film scheduled to hit cinemas worldwide on June 1, 2029.

Fans of Game of Thrones will have to wait a little longer, but the hit fantasy franchise is finally heading to the big screen.

Owen Harris, known for his work on Black Mirror and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the film, while Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards and a writer on Andor, is penning the screenplay.

Based on the world created by George R.R. Martin in A Song of Ice and Fire, the film will explore the early days of Targaryen rule in Westeros. It will focus on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms and the events surrounding the creation of the Iron Throne.

Warner Bros. officially confirmed the project at CinemaCon earlier this year. The announcement of the release date has now provided the first clear timeline for the long-discussed movie.

Plans to bring Game of Thrones to cinemas date back more than a decade. In 2013, series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss reportedly considered concluding the television saga with three feature films. The idea was eventually abandoned, with the series ending after eight seasons in May 2019.

The franchise, however, has continued to expand on television. House of the Dragon recently aired its third season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to return with its second season next year.

Martin had previously expressed reservations about adapting the story for film, citing concerns that the limited runtime could force filmmakers to leave out important parts of his books or focus too heavily on a handful of characters.

With the project now moving forward, the story of Aegon’s conquest and the origins of the Iron Throne will get a new cinematic treatment. Fans will have to wait until June 2029 to see how the world of Westeros is brought to the big screen.
