Indian sports authorities and local law enforcement have intensified security protocols ahead of the Brazilian national football team's arrival in Kolkata, seeking to prevent a recurrence of the logistical disruptions that marred Lionel Messi's visit last December.
Brazil are scheduled to play a friendly match against India on October 3 at Salt Lake Stadium, followed by a second international fixture against Uruguay at the same venue on October 6.
An eight-member Brazilian security delegation, comprising former military officers and security experts, arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday (September 30) to assess venue arrangements and coordinate directly with local police authorities, according to Indian news outlet NDTV.
The heightened precautions follow widespread criticism of event management during Messi's December visit, when overcrowding and security lapses at Salt Lake Stadium forced the Argentine star to depart after just 25 minutes.
In addition to security measures, the West Bengal Department of Sports and Youth Services has undertaken structural renovations at Salt Lake Stadium.
Upgrades include repainting galleries, replacing seating, expanding entry gates, installing perimeter fencing around training pitches, and resurfacing the main playing field following recent heavy rainfall.
