Farmers stage sit-in, human chain in Meherpur

Villagers in Meherpur staged a human chain and sit-in protest demanding a halt to the establishment of an SRB battalion camp on the agricultural land of Chandbil. The protest took place on Wednesday morning, around 9:30 AM, at the Chandbil fields.

Farmer Majed Ali led the event, while farmers Gurudas Haldar, Matiyar Rahman and Shariful Islam Bakul, among others, delivered speeches.

The speakers said the Chandbil fields consist of land capable of producing three crops a year and serve as the sole source of income for the local population. Despite this, the government plans to set up an SRB battalion camp on the site.

They warned that if the plan is implemented, many young people in the area would be left unemployed. They consequently demanded an immediate halt to the establishment of the camp.

The farmers declared that if their demand is not met, they would announce stricter protest programmes in the future.

Over a hundred local farmers participated in the human chain and sit-in protest.
