Mirpur-10 turns into battlefield; City corp vehicles set ablaze

A clash broke out during a footpath eviction drive in the Mirpur-10 area on Wednesday, with hawkers allegedly vandalising police vehicles and setting fire to three Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) garbage trucks.
Mirpur Model Police Station duty officer Mohammad Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident.
According to police and local sources, a fire broke out during the eviction operation, reportedly following an electrical short circuit. The incident triggered anger among hawkers and roadside traders, who allegedly set fire to three city corporation garbage trucks.
They also reportedly vandalised an excavator and a police vehicle during the confrontation.
Two units of the Fire Service were working to bring the fire under control, according to the officials.
Two vehicles of Somoy TV and Jamuna TV also came under attack.
Police fired tear-gas shells to take the situation under control.
The DNCC authorities have clearly stated that, henceforth, no prior announcements, public address system broadcasts, or publicity campaigns will be conducted before operations to clear encroached footpaths within the city corporation area, including Mirpur. Future operations at any location will be carried out entirely by surprise. Therefore, to avoid trouble and legal complications, the concerned illegal encroachers have been instructed to remove their structures and goods immediately on their own initiative.
The police and law enforcement agencies are working to identify those involved in this incident. Preparations are underway to take legal action regarding the obstruction of official duties, the attack on a police vehicle, and the burning of a city corporation vehicles-- acts that resulted in damages worth crores of taka.
