Jos Buttler, the experienced wicketkeeper-batter of England team, has sprung out of the squad due to hamstring injury, head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed.
He could also miss England’s tour of Australia in November.
Jordan Cox is set to get an extended opportunity behind the stumps and in the middle order in Buttler’s absence.
Buttler suffered the hamstring injury while playing in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, which England lost by 16 runs. He left the field after being forced to ‘retire hurt’ while batting. Although he later returned, he could not prevent his side from suffering defeat.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are yet to determine the full extent of the former captain’s injury. However, coach McCullum said Buttler will not be available for the Pakistan tour.
“I think (Cox’s 76 off 52 balls at The Oval) is pretty much a Jos Buttler-type innings. Cox will get an opportunity in Pakistan, which is exciting for him. The disappointing thing is that Jos won’t be available. It will be a good opportunity for us to see where we are at this stage,” McCullum said.
The tri-nation ODI series will be held in Lahore and Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from October 18- 31. Sri Lanka is the third team in the tournament.
