Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri named Morocco's first ever female PM

Morocco has appointed its first female Prime Minister in national history, as King Mohammed VI named Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri to lead the government following last week's parliamentary elections.
The 50-year-old leader of the centrist Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) becomes the second woman to serve as a prime minister in the Arab world, following Tunisia's Najla Bouden.
According to a royal palace statement issued on Tuesday (September 29), El Mansouri, who currently serves as the Minister of Urban Planning and Mayor of Marrakech, has been tasked with forming a new coalition government.
In the parliamentary elections, PAM secured the largest bloc with 97 seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives, falling short of the 198-seat majority required to govern alone.
El Mansouri's immediate task involves negotiating coalition partnerships to reach a majority. The incoming administration will oversee significant public investments ahead of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain.
Born in Marrakech in 1976, El Mansouri holds advanced degrees in law from the University of Montpellier in France and New York University.
She became Marrakech's first female mayor in 2009 before joining the national cabinet as Minister of National Territory Planning, Land Urbanism, Housing and City Policy in October 2021.
