14pc quota proposed for govt school admissions

A total of 14 percent of seats in government secondary schools has been proposed to be reserved under six categories for the 2027 academic year.

The proposal is part of a draft admission policy prepared by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) and sent to the Education Ministry for approval.

According to the draft, 5 percent of seats will be reserved for children of freedom fighters or martyred freedom fighters, while 2 percent will be reserved for students with special needs.

Children of officials and employees of the Education Ministry will get 1 percent, while another 1 percent will be reserved for children of officials and employees of offices and agencies under the ministry.

Another 2 percent of seats will be reserved for twins and 3 percent for siblings already studying at the institution or applying together.

If eligible applicants are unavailable under any category, the vacant seats will be filled from the other specified category or the general pool, according to the draft.

For private secondary schools, the proposed quota is 15 percent, including an additional 1 percent for children staying at Lillah boarding facilities.

The draft also proposes reserving 40 percent of seats in government schools in Dhaka city for students living within the schools' designated catchment areas.

For admission to Class VI, 10 percent of the total seats will be reserved for students who have passed Class V from independent government primary schools.

The draft may receive final approval by October 5, if all procedures are completed as planned.

DSHE Director General Prof Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel said the Education Ministry would approve the policy and could make changes to the draft if necessary.
