Government embarrassed over vandalism of vaccination centre

The government is embarrassed over the demolition of the Radda MCH-FP Centre, a mother and child health centre in Mirpur, Dhaka, said Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman.

He said those involved would be brought under the law based on the police investigation.

He made the remarks at a press briefing at the Directorate of Mass Communication in the Secretariat on Tuesday (September 29).

Asked why those identified through CCTV footage had not yet been arrested, Zahed said the matter was proceeding through a legal process.

He said media investigations were important but could not replace a police probe, which would form the basis for the final charge sheet.

“If the police are convinced through their investigation, those involved will be brought under the law,” he said.

Zahed also urged responsible reporting amid the spread of misinformation on social media.

He said false narratives were being created using the names of government officials, while stressing that fact-based criticism of the government was part of democracy.

“In a country like Bangladesh, a government in power will naturally make many mistakes. It can be criticised logically. But we should not do so with misinformation,” he said.

He said discussions were underway with stakeholders on the Cyber Security Act to address misinformation through a legal framework.
