Heart disease accounts for 17pc of deaths in B'desh

World Heart Day is being observed on Tuesday (September 29) with calls to increase public awareness regarding cardiovascular diseases, early risk detection, and accessible emergency healthcare services.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, cardiovascular diseases accounted for nearly 1.98 crore deaths globally in 2022, representing 32 per cent of all global fatalities, with over three-quarters occurring in low- and middle-income nations.
In Bangladesh, cardiovascular conditions contribute to nearly 17 per cent of all recorded deaths, while medical experts note that one in five young adults remains at high risk of developing heart disease.
Tobacco usage serves as a primary risk factor, contributing to 24 per cent of the estimated 2,77,000 annual heart disease deaths recorded across Bangladesh, where 35.3 per cent of adults consume tobacco products.
Medical professionals highlighted that specialized cardiac treatment remains heavily concentrated in major urban centers like Dhaka, creating severe barriers for rural patients seeking urgent intervention following a heart attack.
Health experts advised adopting preventive measures, including at least 30 minutes of daily physical exercise, reduced intake of saturated fats and salt, weight management, tobacco cessation, and regular health check-ups.
