Bus strike hits five routes in Chuadanga

Bus services on five inter-district local routes in Chuadanga have been suspended indefinitely following alleged attacks on transport workers and the obstruction of buses on a highway.
The strike began at 6 AM on Monday, called by the Chuadanga Motor Transport Workers’ Union and local bus drivers. Long-distance bus services in the district will also remain suspended from 6 AM Tuesday until the dispute is resolved.
The decision has caused significant hardship for commuters, many of whom are relying on battery-powered easy bikes as an alternative. Passengers said the alternative transport costs more and takes longer than buses.
According to transport workers, a dispute broke out between local bus workers and easy-bike and battery-powered three-wheeler drivers at Fakirpara in Damurhuda upazila on Sunday. The workers alleged that several bus staff were assaulted during the incident.
They also alleged that easy-bike drivers later blocked buses on the highway with barricades, leaving them stranded for around five hours. The workers claimed that the authorities failed to take effective action during the incident.
At a meeting organised by the Transport Workers and Bus Owners’ Unity Council on Monday, it was decided that long-distance services would also be suspended from Tuesday morning until the issue is settled.
Chuadanga Inter-District Bus-Minibus Owners’ Group General Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the strike was called in protest against the alleged assault on transport workers and the obstruction of buses on the highway.
He said local bus services were suspended from Monday morning and the decision to halt long-distance buses from Tuesday was taken at Monday’s meeting.
Passengers urged the authorities and transport representatives to resolve the dispute through discussions to reduce public suffering.
