MP Gazi Nazrul sent to jail after remand

Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam was sent to jail on Monday after completing eight days of remand in two phases in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam’s suicide.

After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam denied him bail and ordered that he be sent to jail.

Police Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the DB Tejgaon zonal team, also the investigation officer of the case, sought his detention after the remand ended. Defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam sought bail for the MP.

Mariam(19) was found hanging inside Flat 203 of the NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on September 20.

The following day, her father, S M Masum Billah, filed the case against Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.

Police arrested Nazrul and Maksuda that night.
