Rooppur plant uranium shipment to arrive from Oct 1

A delayed shipment of uranium fuel for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is set to begin arriving from October 1 after authorities resolved airspace clearance complications, project officials said.

Dr Md Kabir Hossain, project director of the power plant, confirmed the development, according to a report by a private television channel’s online news outlet.

The first batch of nuclear fuel for Rooppur’s first unit arrived in Bangladesh in 2023. The fuel was loaded into the reactor in May this year.

Once the plant begins commercial operation, some of the uranium fuel assemblies will need to be replaced periodically rather than replacing the entire fuel load at once. The additional fuel shipment was originally scheduled to arrive on September 24.

The uranium is transported from Russia through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India before reaching Bangladesh. The shipment was delayed after the flight failed to secure the necessary airspace clearances from all the countries along the route.

With the required approvals now in place, the shipment is expected to start arriving from October 1, Kabir said.

He also said steps have been taken to resolve an issue involving a safety valve at the Rooppur plant. If the remaining technical issues are resolved as planned, the plant could move towards electricity generation soon, he said.
