358 detained in anti-teen gang drive in Chandpur

Police have detained 358 people in a special anti-teen gang operation across Chandpur district.
The operation began on Sunday evening (September 27) to keep teenagers and young people away from teen gangs, drugs, online gambling and other criminal activities, according to police.
Of those detained, 35 were from Chandpur Sadar, 53 from Matlab North, 37 from Matlab South, 41 from Faridganj, 45 from Shahrasti, 62 from Kachua, 37 from Hajiganj and 48 from Haimchar.
Police said, drugs were recovered from several of those detained. Some teenagers were also found gambling through online games on mobile phones.
Police said, the identities and involvement of the detainees are being verified. Those found to be involved in criminal activities will face legal action, while others are being handed over to their families after counselling and obtaining undertakings in the presence of their guardians.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle) Jabir Hossain Sanib said, "the operation was aimed at warning teenagers and young people against getting involved in drugs, suspicious gatherings in isolated places, eve-teasing, online gambling and teen gang activities."
He said the police had no intention of harassing students or young people unnecessarily, but rather sought to ensure a safe and crime-free environment in the Matlab area.
Chandpur Superintendent of Police Md Mizanur Rahman said simultaneous drives were conducted at all police stations across the district. Two mobile courts were also conducted during the operation.
Those found carrying drugs will face cases, while the remaining teenagers will be handed over to their families, he said, adding that such special drives against teen gangs, drugs, eve-teasing and online gambling will continue.
