100 more pink buses to be launched soon

The government has taken steps to introduce 100 more Pink buses to facilitate women’s travel to schools, colleges and workplaces, as the existing 14 buses operating on 13 routes are insufficient to meet demand.

The decision was discussed at the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday.

Committee Chairman and Chief Whip Rakibul Islam presided over the meeting. Members of the committee, including Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Lutfor Rahman, Md Ruhul Amin Dulal, Mohammad Aktaruzzaman, Newaz Halima Arly, Md Rafiqul Islam Khan and Md Matiar Rahman, attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed the overall activities of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and its subordinate departments and agencies. It also reviewed the ministry’s plans and measures to bring discipline to roads and highways.

The ministry has also taken steps to identify risky intersections and accident-prone areas and undertake necessary measures to straighten and widen those sections to prevent road accidents. New projects are also being planned with provisions for straight-line road alignments where necessary.

The committee recommended that the ministry take initiatives to arrange an on-site inspection of the current condition of a modern luxury resort built on 72 acres of land in the service area of the Karnaphuli Tunnel.

Secretaries of the Road Transport and Highways Division and the Bridges Division, senior officials of the ministry, divisions and affiliated agencies, and senior officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were present at the meeting.
