IU moves to arrange marriage after student couple caught

Two students of Islamic University (IU) were caught by local residents on Friday night while they were together inside a jackfruit garden near the university’s main gate.

The students are a male student from the 2023–24 academic session of the Department of Marketing and a female student from the 2024–25 session of the Department of Human Resource Management.

According to local sources, the two had reportedly been visiting the garden adjacent to a madrasa mosque, east of the university’s main gate, at night over the past seven days. Local residents had been monitoring their movements and caught them on Friday when they found the pair inside the garden, between two structures.

Being informed, members of the university’s proctorial body went to the scene and took the two students to the proctor’s office.

University Registrar Prof Dr Atiqur Rahman, Proctor Prof Dr Shahinuzzaman, leaders of student political organisations and the two students were present during subsequent discussions.

Following the discussion, the proctorial body decided, with the written consent of both students, to arrange their marriage socially on Saturday in presence of their respective families.

The male student said he had been in a relationship with the woman for around seven to eight months and was willing to marry her.

“I made a mistake. Besides, I love her. I am willing to marry her,” he said.
