Four members of same family still missing after trawler capsizes in Meghna

Four members of the same family, including a child, remain missing after a passenger trawler capsized in the Meghna River in Narayanganj.

A rescue operation resumed on Friday morning to locate the missing people.

The trawler capsized in the Meghna near Sonamayi in Sonargaon on Thursday after encountering a storm.

Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of the Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the rescue operation had been underway since the incident.

He said no trace of the four missing people had been found so far. Fire Service, Coast Guard, naval police and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) teams are conducting the operation in coordination.

According to local sources, 13 people were travelling by trawler from Homna in Cumilla to Hariya in Sonargaon to attend a wedding ceremony on Thursday.

The trawler came under a storm near Sonamayi and capsized. Eight passengers managed to swim to safety, while five others went missing.

A woman was later recovered dead, while four members of the same family remain missing.

A joint rescue operation involving Fire Service divers, the Coast Guard, naval police and BIWTA began at around 7:00 AM on Friday.
