PM to address world in Bangla at midnight

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in Bangla at around 3AM Bangladesh time on Friday (September 25), delivering his first speech at the UNGA as prime minister.

He will deliver the address at 5PM local time in New York on Thursday (September 24). Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin confirmed the timing at a briefing in New York.

The speech is expected to cover Bangladesh’s democratic transition, rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation.

The Rohingya crisis, youth and women’s empowerment, education, healthcare, modern technology and reform of the multilateral system are also among the issues identified as priorities for the UNGA engagements.

The speech will be his first address to the UN General Assembly as Bangladesh’s prime minister. He will also become the third member of his family to address the UN General Assembly, following his father Ziaur Rahman and mother Khaleda Zia.
