Tarique Rahman proposes four measures to tackle climate risks

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has proposed four measures at a UN high-level meeting to address the threats posed by rising sea levels.

Speaking at the meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, he called for faster and fairer cuts in carbon emissions, adequate climate funding for vulnerable countries, access to climate technology and early-warning systems, and proper rehabilitation of climate refugees.

Rahman said Bangladesh is already taking steps to strengthen climate resilience, including improving early-warning systems, expanding cyclone preparedness and planning to dredge 20,000 kilometres of rivers and canals.

He also said Bangladesh aims to increase renewable energy to at least 20 percent of its energy mix by 2030 and has launched initiatives for green industries, environmentally friendly transport and tree plantation.
