PM to deliver first UNGA speech in Bangla

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in Bangla at 5:00 PM New York time on Thursday, which will be around 3:00 AM Bangladesh time on Friday.

This will be Tarique Rahman’s first address to the UN General Assembly since becoming prime minister on February 17. His speech will reflect Bangladesh’s perspectives and priorities on the international stage, according to Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin.

Tarique will become the third member of his family to address the UN General Assembly.

His father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, addressed the UN General Assembly’s 11th special session on August 26, 1980. His mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, addressed the 48th session of the General Assembly on October 1, 1993.

The prime minister is scheduled to speak for 15 minutes. His address is expected to focus on climate change, global peace and security, sustainable development, economic cooperation, humanitarian issues and the Rohingya crisis.

Climate change is expected to receive particular attention, with Bangladesh set to present its position and priorities on the issue before the international community.

Tarique is also expected to highlight Bangladesh’s democratic transition, development priorities, global peace and sustainable solutions to international crises. Poverty reduction, economic potential, climate action and climate finance are also expected to feature in his speech.

The Rohingya crisis remains a major priority during his visit to New York. On the sidelines of the UNGA, Tarique has held meetings with international officials on efforts to create conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas.

Before delivering his UNGA speech, the prime minister is scheduled to give opening remarks at a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters on addressing existential threats caused by rising sea levels.

His schedule also includes a bilateral meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and participation in a high-level side event on integrating midwives into primary healthcare to prevent maternal and newborn deaths.

He is also scheduled to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

After his UNGA address, Tarique is expected to attend a dinner hosted in his honour at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
