Gazi Nazrul's second wife's death: Uncle sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Wednesday (September 23) sent Obaidur Rahman, uncle of the late Mariam Khatun, to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of her suicide.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after Obaidur was produced before the court following his arrest. The investigating officer, DB Inspector Mohammad Salauddin, sought his detention, saying investigators had found evidence of his alleged involvement in Mariam’s death. No bail petition was filed on his behalf. 

Mariam, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was found hanging at a flat in the NAM Bhaban area opposite Parliament on September 20. Her father, S M Masum Billah, later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Obaidur Rahman of abetting the suicide. 

The case was later handed over to the Detective Branch. Gazi Nazrul is currently on a four-day remand, while Maksuda was sent to jail after completing her one-day remand, according to the report.
