9 jailed over slaughtering 13 horses in Manikganj

A mobile court in Manikganj sentenced nine people to jail for allegedly slaughtering 13 horses and processing their meat.

The court conducted a raid at a warehouse in the Jagir area of Manikganj Sadar around noon on Wednesday and handed down the sentences, officials said.

One of the accused was sentenced to one year in jail, while the other eight received six-month terms.

Police had detained the nine during a raid at the warehouse around 2 AM on Tuesday after receiving information that horses were being slaughtered and their meat processed there.

The processed meat was allegedly intended for supply to hotels in Dhaka and nearby areas.

The nine were sentenced for violating Section 4 of the Animal Slaughter and Meat Quality Control Act, 2011, officials said.
