Consumers surround NESCO office in Rangpur demanding cancellation of prepaid meters

Rangpur Electricity Consumers Forum on Wednesday surrounded the NESCO office in the city, demanding the removal of prepaid electricity meters and the reinstatement of digital postpaid meters.

Two processions from Shapla Chattar and Lalbagh reached the NESCO Rangpur office in the morning and staged a demonstration there. Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the chief engineer.

At the rally, chaired by forum president Prof Md Delwar Hossain, speakers included adviser Anwar Hossain Bablu, Mirza Babar Bablu, member secretary Ahsanul Arifin Titu, Md Sohel, Shahidul Islam Sumon and affected consumers Naznin Begum, Shahana Khatun and Shafiqul Islam, among others.

Shahana Khatun said her household's use of lights, fans and cooking appliances had not increased, but her electricity costs had tripled since a prepaid meter was installed.

Shafiqul Islam alleged that NESCO workers installed a prepaid meter at his home while he was away after telling his wife that failing to install it immediately would result in a Tk 20,000 fine and a case.

Prof Delwar Hossain alleged that NESCO had installed the meters against consumers' wishes and demanded that the prepaid meter project be cancelled immediately.

Ahsanul Arifin Titu said they had submitted the consumers' complaints to the authorities peacefully and demanded that prepaid meters be removed and the previous digital postpaid meters restored. He warned of tougher programmes if the demands were not addressed.
