Government benefits to be provided based on merit: Mir Helal

State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin has said the government will ensure public services and benefits based on merit and prescribed criteria.
“From now on, only merit will be assessed. Political affiliation, religion, caste or ethnicity will not be considered when undertaking any project,” he said.
The state minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a programme organised by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board at Khagrachhari Town Hall on Wednesday to distribute education scholarships, multimedia equipment to educational institutions and sewing machines to women for self-employment.
He said the government was working to improve people's living standards and ensure their security, basic needs and access to public services.
“Actions are worth more than words. Many things may not be visible yet, but many changes will become visible through the government's activities in the future,” he said.
Mir Helal said people who develop themselves through education and learning would have greater opportunities to progress.
He said Family Cards, Farmer Cards and Sports Cards, among other government initiatives, would be distributed based on prescribed criteria.
“Many of you know that we have taken up the Family Card project. Similarly, the Farmer Card project has also been introduced. These programmes have been designed in a way that leaves no scope to provide or deny benefits based on political identity. Anyone selected according to the prescribed criteria will receive their rightful benefits,” he said.
The programme was chaired by Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board Vice-Chairman Sheikh Saleh Ahmed.
Khagrachhari MP Abdul Wadud Bhuiyan, Khagrachhari Hill District Council Chairman Mrasa Thowai Marma, Deputy Commissioner Anwar Sadat and Superintendent of Police Md Mortaza Ali Khan also spoke at the programme.
A total of 778 students from Khagrachhari received Tk 92.05 lakh in education scholarships. Of them, 493 college students received Tk 10,000 each, totalling Tk 49.30 lakh, while 285 university students received Tk 15,000 each, totalling Tk 42.75 lakh.
Multimedia equipment was distributed to 23 educational institutions in the district. Ten women entrepreneurs in each upazila also received a sewing machine to support self-employment.
On the same day, Mir Helal inaugurated a children's hostel at Giripur in Sadar upazila and a girder bridge over Bet Chhari Mukh Khal. The development board said the projects were built at a cost of around Tk 3 crore.
