Trump, GCC leaders discuss Iran war, regional security

US President Donald Trump met leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and senior officials from other Middle Eastern countries in New York on Tuesday (September 22) to discuss the Iran conflict and regional security.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, brought together leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Officials from Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Türkiye also attended.
The talks focused on the Iran war, regional security and disruptions to energy and maritime routes, with particular concern over the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea—key routes for global energy supplies and trade.
Gulf states are seeking to prevent further escalation and secure greater protection for their territories and critical energy infrastructure. Qatar has faced disruptions to liquefied natural gas exports, while Saudi Arabia has come under increased pressure from Houthi forces in Yemen.
The meeting came as Trump weighs military and diplomatic options regarding Iran. While maintaining pressure on Tehran, the US president said Tuesday that discussions with Iran were ongoing and expressed confidence that a settlement would eventually be reached.
The talks were closely watched for indications of whether Washington and its Gulf partners could pursue a diplomatic path to ease the regional conflict while addressing their differing security and economic concerns.
