Local government elections are unlikely to take place this year, according to State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam.

Speaking at a news briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday (September 23) morning, the State Minister cited Election Commission statements indicating that the elections will not commence this year.

He explained that the commission plans to complete the local polls by June 6, 2027, taking into account upcoming public examinations and Ramadan.

However, the state minister stressed that determining the exact election schedule remains the sole authority of the Election Commission. He noted that the government has prepared a budget of around Tk 6,000 crore to conduct elections across five tiers of local government.

Addressing power generation initiatives, the State Minister outlined a new government project to install rooftop solar panels across 6,544 facilities, offices, and local markets under the ministry. The government will disburse Tk 370 crore for the scheme, with a target to begin power production by January 2027.
