Spain coach calls Rodri ‘Messi of Spanish football’

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has compared midfielder Rodri with Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, praising the player’s ability to adapt to any team or situation.
Rodri played a key role in Spain’s 2026 World Cup triumph and won the tournament’s Golden Ball for his performances. He later left Manchester City to join Barcelona, drawing fresh attention to his move.
Speaking to Radio Marca, de la Fuente said he had no doubts about Rodri’s ability to settle at Barcelona. He also described him as one of the best players in the world in his position.
“Rodri is the Messi of Spanish football. So it will be easy for him to adapt to any team or situation. He is the best in the world in his position,” he said.
De la Fuente also welcomed the return of Spanish players to La Liga. He said having some of the world’s best players represent Spanish clubs would further strengthen the league’s competitive level and prestige.
“I am delighted that these exceptional footballers are playing in La Liga. It makes the league richer. The best players in the world, who are also our players, are competing for Spanish clubs. If those still abroad also return, they will have the opportunity to show their ability, talent and footballing skills,” he said.
The interview also touched on Messi’s decision to retire from international football. De la Fuente wished the Argentine star well and said it would be extremely difficult to properly assess Messi’s contribution and achievements in football.
“Out of love for football, admiration for a legend, the experience of knowing him and gratitude, I say that when someone retires late, their achievements can usually be assessed better. But that will not be the case with Messi,” de la Fuente said.
