Gazi Nazrul, wife remanded over alleged suicide abetment

A Dhaka court on Monday placed expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader and lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam on four days’ remand and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, on one day’s remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Akter.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the afternoon.

Police had sought seven days’ remand for both accused for questioning. The court granted four days for Gazi Nazrul and one day for Maksuda.

State counsel Omar Faruk Faruqi told the court that Mariam had allegedly been forced into marriage with Gazi Nazrul through the abuse of power.

He also said a note allegedly left by Mariam mentioned physical abuse and called for an investigation to determine whether others were involved in her death.

“The truth must be uncovered. The investigation officer sought custody of the accused for questioning to uncover the mystery,” Faruqi told reporters after the hearing.

He said the investigation would examine where and how Mariam had allegedly been subjected to abuse and whether anyone had provided the notes with the intention of using them in the case.

Gazi Nazrul Islam and Maksuda Begum were brought to court from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in a microbus around 2:22 PM and were kept in the court lock-up before the hearing.
