A 62-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death by his nephew and his associates over a long-standing land dispute in Kalihati upazila of Tangail.
The incident took place on Saturday (September 19) evening in Char Hamjani village of Durgapur Union in Kalihati upazila.
The deceased was identified as Shahidul Islam Mondol son of Kashem Ali Mondol of the village.
According to local residents, Shahidul had been involved in a long-running dispute with his relative Yusuf Ali, son of the late Amzad Ali, over inheritance of a piece of land.
On Saturday evening, while Shahidul was on his way to offer prayers, Yusuf and his associates allegedly launched a sudden attack on him. They allegedly hacked him with sharp weapons and fled, leaving him critically injured.
Local residents later rescued Shahidul and took him to Tangail General Hospital, where duty doctors declared him dead.
Kalihati Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kaiyum Khan Siddiqui said, "the killing was reportedly linked to a dispute over land inheritance."
The body has been kept at the morgue of Tangail General Hospital for an autopsy.
Police are conducting drives to arrest those involved in the incident.
