Bangladesh suffer 13-0 defeat to China in women’s hockey

Bangladesh suffered a heavy 13-0 defeat to China in their opening match of the women’s hockey competition at the Asian Games.

Zhong Jiaqi scored a hat-trick for China, finding the net in the 4th, 13th and 29th minutes. Chen Yang, Zhou Meirong and Chen Yi each scored twice in the 12th and 18th, 38th and 51st, and 41st and 57th minutes respectively.

Li Hong, Zhang Ying, Ma Ning and Yang Liu also scored one goal each in the 13th, 27th, 32nd and 36th minutes respectively.

Bangladesh failed to score throughout the match. Kana Akter received a yellow card in the 60th minute.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s men’s hockey team also lost their opening match, suffering a 5-0 defeat to South Korea.

The women’s team will have an immediate chance to bounce back as they face Malaysia in their second Pool A match on Sunday.

A total of 12 teams are competing in the women’s hockey event at the Asian Games. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals, while the remaining teams will compete in classification matches. The final is scheduled to be held on October 2.

The competition also carries significance for qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The Asian Games gold medallist will qualify directly for the Olympic main event, while teams finishing second to fifth will compete in the 2028 FIH Olympic Qualifier.
